Making digital money more sustainable

The cryptocurrency Bitcoin devours large amounts of energy. Responsible for this is the proof-of-work process that legitimizes all transactions of the digital money. A study by ETH Zurich commissioned by the Swiss Federal Office of Energy has quantified the energy consumption and shows ways in which power consumption could be curbed by switching to less energy-intensive cryptocurrencies.
