Reverse mentoring: young people learn to guide older people   

The exchange of knowledge between generations is essential for the development of talent and the dynamic is shifting: younger employees are mentoring older generations. This so-called "reverse mentoring" offers a new digital perspective for the experienced generation. Jordan explains: "Mentoring between different generations not only strengthens employees' skills, but also creates an environment of mutual respect and integration. It allows them to pass on their knowledge and skills, which helps them to distinguish themselves as subject matter experts. "Giving young employees the opportunity to share their knowledge makes them feel valued and heard within the company," explains Jordan. "This recognition is crucial for their commitment and motivation.

Reverse mentoring can also serve as a catalyst for cultural change in companies. It offers the opportunity to gain valuable insights, e.g. by highlighting shortcomings and inefficient processes. Jordan emphasizes: "Expertise gained through years of experience can be limiting without new perspectives. Younger team members bring new ideas and challenges that can break old habits".   

Finally, Jordan shares some ideas for integrating reverse mentoring into an organization:   

  • Organize a group discussion: Have regular small discussions with colleagues of different generations about current topics or trends.   
  • Research: Ask younger team members to research specific emerging technologies or trends and share their findings with the other generations in short lunch meetings.   
  • Personal mentoring: Bring experienced employees together with younger mentors and encourage monthly one-on-one meetings.   
  • Experiment: Try out different formats and find out what suits the organization's needs best.  

With these initiatives, companies can harness the power of reverse mentoring to improve both their culture and their performance.
